Weston Auto Group Takes Industry-Leading Pledge to Protect Customer Data

GRESHAM, OR – When Weston Auto Group conducted a digital analysis of its website, the family-owned Oregon dealership was unpleasantly surprised to find that other companies were trying to profit from its online traffic.

“Third parties were trying to steal our customers’ data without our knowledge or theirs,” said Jay Weston, president of the Oregon dealerships. “We value our users’ privacy, and immediately made a pledge to protect personal customer information.”

Most car dealerships are unaware that their websites are loaded with third-party cookies and scripts that tracktheir website visitors, according to Mike Annable, head of auto analytics for Campaign Precision, a national digital marketing firm with decades of experience serving the automotive industry. “The goal of these third parties is to identify, track and remarket the dealership’s privatetraffic for their own benefit.”

When Weston Auto Group engaged Campaign Precision to take its digital marketing services to the next level, Annable’s initial analysis found dozens of scripts running all over the website, buyweston.com.  Annable quickly brought this revenue-stealing problem to management’s attention.

“Weston Auto Group is deeply concerned about protecting the privacy of our current and prospective customers,” said Weston. “Today, we are one the few dealerships in the U.S. that goes out of the way to remove third-party scripts and cookies, ensuring our visitors are anonymous.”

Annable saysthe third-party data-tracking practice is particularly common in the auto industry. “Some sites can have a dozen or more scripts running in the background at any given time,” he said. “It’s a huge problem for dealerships spending money on digital marketing to drive customers to their websites.”

With support from Campaign Precision, Weston Auto Group is looking forward to another successful year in 2019. Founder Jim Weston started the dealership in 1975 as Weston Pontiac, GMC, Jeep, after beginning his career in 1959 as a car salesman. Under the previous ownership, the dealership had lost money for 19 consecutive months, and was in last place for sales volume in the district.  During his first month of operation, Jim Weston Pontiac posted record sales for that location, and moved from last to first place in the district.

Since its founding, the dealership has followed a philosophy of treating customers like family, serving multiple generations through first-time, repeat and referral sales. Today, sons Jan and Jay run the dealerships.
